Armorer Works - AW-VX0201 Custom Hex Cut Gas Blowback Airsoft Pistol in Black

The Armorer Works AW-VX0201 Custom Hex Cut is a gas blowback airsoft pistol with AW Custom's unmistakable competition-inspired styling and a strong focus on lightweight, responsive handling. Finished in black and measuring 200mm long, this GBB pistol combines a heavily cut slide with a skeletonised polymer frame, textured grip and factory-fitted HEX magwell. The result is an airsoft handgun that feels noticeably nimble in the hand. At 516.5g without its magazine, it avoids the heavy, slightly sluggish character found on some full-metal gas pistols. Pick it up and the intention is pretty obvious: this thing was made to move quickly.

Starting at the muzzle, the VX0201 features a threaded outer barrel that allows a compatible suppressor or compensator to be fitted. The outer barrel also carries the Armorer Works logo, which is visible through the large openings in the slide and adds another neat touch to the overall appearance. The real attention-grabber, though, is AW's lightweight HEX-cut slide. Large sections have been removed in the familiar geometric AW Custom pattern, giving this BB pistol its aggressive looks while also reducing the amount of material moving backwards and forwards during the blowback cycle.

That reduction in slide mass isn't merely cosmetic. Every time a GBB pistol fires, gas drives the slide backwards before it returns forward and chambers the next BB. A lighter reciprocating assembly can give that movement a sharper, more agile character, and that's exactly the sort of feel the AW-VX0201 is chasing. There's still enough blowback movement to provide the satisfying mechanical feedback people buy a gas blowback airsoft gun for, but it doesn't feel like you're waiting for a lump of metal to finish its journey before lining up the next shot. Quick follow-ups? Yep, that's where this setup starts to shine.

The sights continue the competition theme. Armorer Works has fitted luminous fibre elements to both the front and rear sights, providing bright reference points when bringing the pistol onto target. That's particularly useful during fast target transitions where you want to acquire the sight picture without spending ages searching for small black irons against a dark background. For Action Air or IPSC-style target shooting, the advantage is easy to understand, but it's equally useful when this airsoft pistol is being carried as a skirmish sidearm and you need to bring it into action quickly.

Moving down to the lower half, AW uses a skeletonised polymer frame with textured stippling across the gripping surfaces. The texture provides additional purchase without requiring an oversized grip, while two finger grooves underneath the trigger guard give the support hand somewhere natural to settle. That allows a higher, more secure two-handed grip, which works nicely with the lightweight slide when firing several shots in quick succession. It's one of those combinations that makes more sense once you've actually got the pistol in your hands – good grip placement below, less reciprocating mass above.

Under the frame sits an integrated accessory rail, providing a straightforward mounting point for compatible pistol lights or laser units. At the opposite end of the grip is AW's factory-fitted HEX-cut magwell. The flared opening helps guide the magazine into the pistol during a reload, reducing the need to line everything up perfectly while you're concentrating on the next target. Sounds like a tiny detail, doesn't it? Try fumbling a magazine change under pressure and suddenly a decent magwell feels like one of mankind's better inventions.

The supplied VXMG02 gas magazine weighs approximately 278.6g and features an enlarged base plate. Apart from complementing the competition appearance of the airsoft handgun, that larger base gives your fingers something useful to grab when removing the magazine. Internally, the VX0201 uses a 93mm inner barrel and is listed at approximately 320 FPS. Those figures suit its role as a skirmish sidearm or target-shooting GBB pistol nicely, although gas-powered replicas naturally vary according to temperature, gas pressure and other conditions. Chronograph testing with the gas and BB weight you intend to use is always sensible before heading into a game.

What makes the AW-VX0201 particularly interesting is how the individual features work together rather than simply looking flashy on a specification sheet. The 516.5g base pistol weight, HEX-cut slide and polymer frame keep things lively, while the stippled grip, finger grooves and luminous fibre sights help with control and target acquisition. Then you've got the threaded barrel, accessory rail and flared magwell providing plenty of scope for setting the pistol up around your own preferences. There's a fair bit going on here, but it doesn't feel as though features have been bolted on simply for decoration.

For players looking for a modern gas blowback airsoft pistol with something more distinctive than a plain service-handgun appearance, the Armorer Works AW-VX0201 has bags of character. The HEX styling catches your eye first, naturally, but underneath it sits a practical combination of lightweight construction and competition-focused details. Run it as a skirmish sidearm, build it into an Action Air setup or simply enjoy the snappy feel of the lightweight gas blowback action. Either way, this is an airsoft pistol that rewards fast handling without becoming unnecessarily bulky. Compact, sharp and unmistakably AW Custom.
