What is Airsoft?

The game of airsoft skirmishing ("BB war", "survival wargaming") is, to describe it easily, a bunch of airsoft enthusiasts running around a site, shooting each other and completing objectives and missions. Airsoft is similar to paintball yet not; it's cheaper more realistic and more fun. Airsoft guns are fully automatic. Yep, fully automatic capable of firing up to 20 rounds per second. Airsoft guns are different from paintball guns in their realism. They are made to reflect real designs such as Glocks, M16s AK47s even guns such as the M60 heavy machine gun or even the six-barrelled M134a Mini gun as seen in the Film Predator! Paintball guns shoot plastic balls that are filled with paint, which break and mark the opponent's body upon impact, airsoft on the other hand is based on honesty, when one feels a hit the person acknowledges the hit and walks off the current game and awaits the next. Most sites also have game Marshals who help in acknowledging contacts, and have fully comprehensive insurance. Missions might include rescuing a downed pilot or taking a fort or bridge. Airsoft games are fast, furious and most of all fun. What's more airsoft guns don't break the bank like paintball. None of the guns we feature on our site are real, the are all airsoft gun. Even though appearance wise they look very realistic, none of any airsoft guns can and will ever be able to be modified to fire live ammunition. Also known as "hobby guns or BB guns", the sport of airsoft has amassed to a large following over the last several years. There are well over thousands of airsoft enthusiasts all over the world, in the UK, US and in Japan the numbers possibly go up into the several hundred thousands.

What types of Airsoft Guns are available?

As already discussed, an airsoft gun is one that fires a 6mm ball-bearing projectile at low velocity, typically less than 1 joule (they won't cause physical harm). Many variants of guns are available from concealed-carry guns such as the Walther PPK to the huge M134a Six-barrel mini-gun capable of firing 6,000 bbs a minute. Generally the airsoft replicas mimic their real-steels characteristics e.g. sniper rifles have a long range and are accurate, while shotguns are good for close-range work but lack rate of fire. You choice your weapons depending on how you want to play! Airsoft guns are either, semi-automatic (fires once when you pull the trigger), fully-automatic (fires as many as 20 rounds per second) or single action (you chamber each round). Guns fall into three key subgroups: electric guns, gas guns, and spring guns. The first, and most common airsoft guns are spring-operated guns. The power source of the gun is the operating cocking mechanism, locking back a spring piston and feeding a BB into the chamber. For example in a spring pistol this means locking back the slide each time before you fire yawn. The majority of these spring guns are cheap, nasty, are poorly constructed, low in power and a complete disappointment. The are often seen advertised for around £15-30.

Spring guns

The only spring guns Wolf Armouries Sells are high-power and highly realistic air-cocking shotguns and bolt-action sniper rifles. These guns require the user to cock a high-powered spring-loaded piston that propels the bb when the trigger is pulled. Spring replicas include sniper rifles such as the Accuracy International L96A1 or the Maruzen APS2, popular spring shotguns are the Marui SPAS and M3 series (These Spring shotguns fire 3 bbs at once!). As standard most of these guns have an output of around 0.8 joules (a basic cheap spring handgun fires between 0.3-0.6 joules). However as these guns are self-loading they fall into a different legally category to other airsoft guns, technically they can be taken above 1 joule and converted to an "airgun". It is for this reason that the sniper rifles can be converted to higher powers (commonly up to 500 fps with a 0.2bb) and employed in the sharp shooter role as they benefit for extra range.

Gas guns

The next types of guns are gas-guns. These simply use a gas charge to propel the bb, and tend to be semi-or fully automatic, the advantage being the user doesn't have to chamber each round. Gas airsoft guns should not be confused with CO2 guns; airsoft guns typically run off an inert safe gas called HFC 134a or HFC 22. The gas comes in cans like aerosol with a fill-nozzle at one end, costing 10-£15 per can. The gas is contained somewhere within the gun is a pressurised reservoir, the reservoir is filled in exactly the same way as a gas lighter. Gas guns are generally a lot more powerful than standard cheap spring guns; firing at about 0.8-1 joules. Because gas mechanisms are so small they can fit inside smaller guns such as pistols and submachine guns, examples of gas guns might include most of the Glock and Berretta family. 95% of the gas airsoft guns that Wolf Armouries sell are gas blow-back guns. This means that when they are fired the gas enters a chamber within the gun before propelling the bb, when a set pressure is reach within the chamber a piston forces the cylinder back and cocks the mechanism. Basically, this means that when you're firing a gas blow-back, the action cycles just like the real thing, and the gun produces a small kick as it chambers each round. If you want realism buy a gas blow-back! On most of the models the mechanism is locks open when the magazine is empty just like the real thing. You haven't seen an airsoft gun until you've seen a gas blow-backs mechanism whiz backward and forward and the rounds leave the gun. Examples of gas blow-backs include the Glock 17, the Berretta 92f, Walther PPK,Walter P99. Full-auto gas blow-backs are also available such as the G18c machine pistol or the Ingram MAC-11 submachine gun. All these guns are incredibly realistic, heavy and as well as having an extreme rate of fire of around 1000-1200 rounds per minute! [Some rare older guns fire from compressed air cylinders with a hose attached to the gun; these are rare and generally no longer in manufacture. Some Co2 conversions kits are available for airsoft replicas but Wolf Armouries doesn't not recommend them due to the internal damage to guns they can cause.]

Airsoft Electric Guns

Airsoft Electric Guns dominate the airsofting arena. Capable of firing 15 rounds per second, with effective ranges of over 30 metres, with magazine capacities of hundreds of rounds AEGs soon found popularity when they were introduced over a decade ok. 95% of those who skirmish regularly will use or own an electric gun. They are simply unmatched in terms of firepower and reliability. Wolf Armouries is proud to stock the market leader and creator of the AEG Tokyo Marui. After a decade of producing AEGs Tokyo Marui now produce a wide range of models, including the Colt M16 series, Heckler and Koch MP5, G3 and G36 series, AK47 series and P-90 series (too mention only a few models). AEGs are highly reliable capable of firing thousands of rounds as standard and also economical they run of rechargeable remote-control car style batteries capable of firing thousands of rounds without recharging. AEGs use a battery-powered high-speed motor to drive a set of gears that cocks back a spring-loaded piston to propel the BB forward. At the same time this mechanism loads the bb into the chamber and produces a muzzle velocity of about 0.8 joules and a rate of fire of about 12-15 rounds per second. Standard magazines are loaded either with a spring plunger and are capable of holding 30-120 rounds. While after market hi-caps driven by clock-work are available (and considered the norm for skirmishing) and are capable of holding 180-5000 rounds! In addition to this there are hundreds of accessories for Marui Electric and Wolf stocks many of them. Part of the joy of airsoft is building your own custom weapon to meet your own style of play as well as showing it off in the safe zone!

Where can I play Airsoft in the UK?

There are many game sites open up and down the country. Most sites run games from about 9 till 5 in the evening either Saturday or Sunday and charge a "green" fee of around 10-£20 for players to play if they are bring their own equipment. Some sites offer gun rental if you don't have equipment and usually charge an extra 10-£20 for renting equipment. A good site is insured, well marshalled, has varied terrain, offers food on site and has honest players. That's why we'd suggest you visit our London Urban site! If you can't reach our London site feel free to call us in store and we can give you the details of your nearest airsoft site. Of course there is nothing to stop you playing own your own land if it is out of public view, however Wolf Armouries suggests that you only visit sites that have full-event insurance.

Don't Airsoft Guns hurt?

Not really! Airsoft hurts far less than paintball. Paintballs have a very High Mass, as they are so large. Airsofting BBs travel just as fast, however they only weight on average 0.2grams, so they don't carry much power when they hit you. If you are wearing the correct safety equipment at most a close-range hit will leave a small welt which usually disappears after a few minutes and may sting for a few seconds. BBs rarely break the skin, and most medium range shots don't hurt at all. This is in great contrast to paintball aka painball where it is not uncommon for players to be knocked senseless or go home with melon-sized bruises on their limbs!

Are Airsoft Guns Legal?

Airsoft guns are completely legal under UK legislation. Technically due to their muzzle velocity (the power at which they fire) they are classed as toys under UK law. So long as an Airsoft replica fires at less than 1 Joule (328FPS with a 0.2g BB), it is classed as a toy as is suitable for Airsoft gaming. All standard Wolf Armouries AEGs and Gbbs fire at less than one joule unless specified. While carried in public places they must be carried in a secure manner i.e. a weapons case/proper-rifle bag or LOCKED in a car, and the carrier must have a legitimate reason for transporting the Airsoft replica i.e. transporting it to a game site. Anyone who brandishes an Airsoft weapon openly in a public place may be met by severe Police response.

How much does Airsoft cost as a hobby?

Airsofting is pretty cheap as a survival-war game.

AIRSOFTING IS CHEAPER THAN PAINTBALL.

Thousands of paintballs have converted to Airsoft as they have become disillusioned with the money-hungry paintball industry. If you have your own equipment a days play Airsofting will cost you around £25-30 all up depending upon your ammunition, while a day's paintball could cost you nearer £80. This is because bbs are a lot cheaper than paintballs.100 paintballs might cost £10, but for that same amount you could get 3000 bbs at Wolf Armouries! Like with most hobbies the initial starting costs can be reasonable high; around £300 for a Hi-grade electric airsoft rifle with all the accessories, but once you've got the kit it's much cheaper than paintball to play. However you might wish to customise you gun further, or add additional guns to your armoury. Choice is yours; some players own 1 gun, others own too many to count!

How accurate are Airsoft Guns?

Airsoft guns are not renowned for their accuracy. The guns fire a lightweight projectile (on average 0.2g) down a smooth barrel at a relatively low velocity (on average 280 feet per second). This means that bbs when fired are inherently unstable and will be blown around in flight by air movement. Yet they are far more accurate than paintball guns, and far more consistent in terms of where the rounds go. A standard electric can easily hit a 30cm target a 20 metres consistently and a man sized-target at 30m. Pistols in contrast can easily achieve a 25mm grouping at 10metres, achieving less accuracy at longer ranges. In theory airsoft guns can be more accuracy than this, but it really depends on the shooting skills of the user!!! An airsoft gun in hands of a skilled shooter can be a highly accuracy shooting piece. Accuracy can be increased by using a) A heavier weight of ammunition so the round is more stable in flight, and b) upgraded to a custom Teflon-lined tightened barrel to improve groupings.

What range do Airsoft Guns have?

Range is everything in airsoft!!! With the HOP-unit correctly set a standard AEG should be able engage with a change of hitting the target at 30-35 metres, while a pistol nearer 20-25 metres. Upgraded Electrics can potentially fire about 10% further, while high-powered sniper rifles out beyond the 50-metre mark!

Are Airsoft Guns suitable for Children?

Due to their low power, reliability, easy of use and weight Airsoft Replicas are ideal for teaching children gun awareness. However they should be treated as real-guns, and children should be supervised by an adult while using them and must wear all the correct safety equipment. Wolf Armouries will not sell a gun to anyone under the age of 18, we will only sell a replica to someone aged 14-18 if their parent or Guardian is present, in which case the gun is classed as a gift and is bought by the parent. We do not recommend that children under the age of 14 should use airsoft replicas.

What do I require to operate an Airsoft Electric Gun?

The cheapest way of buying the equipment you need to operate an airsoft electric gun is to buy a Wolf Armouries Starter X-Pack. This includes battery power pack (2 in a large starter pack), charger (with leads if applicable), silicone maintenance spray, 3000 0.2 bbs and a hi-capacity clockwork magazine. This is everything you need to get started, we would suggest you acquire another battery if your likely to be playing very long games or your trigger happy! In addition to this at Wolf Armouries we'd say that you can never have enough magazines and bbs as you don't want to be caught short of ammo in a fire-fight!

Do the rifles come with batteries and chargers?

No, but you can get and add on starter packs with a rifle which include 2 batteries a charger, Hi capacity magazine, silicone spray and 3000 .20g BBs.

How long will my batteries last?

Generally a standard airsoft electric will fire 1000-1200 rounds from a Ni-Cad 8.4volt 600 mAh battery. So a 8.4volt 1800 mAh battery tends to fire about 3000 rounds. Upgraded guns with stronger springs tend to consume about 10-25% extra battery power. Wolf Armouries only stocks hi-quality batteries manufactured from Sanyo produced cells. We have conducted a series of tests that have proved that Sanyo cells on the market lasting longer and providing a high rate of fire than cheaper un-marked Chinese cells that other "airsoft" retailers sell. When buying batteries only trust Sanyo-Type cells!

What do I require to operate an Airsoft Gas Blow-Back?

All you need to operate your gas blow back are hi-quality bbs (remember not to re use them), the correct type of gas (call us if you are unsure of what brand of gas you need for your airsoft model) and silicone spray. Airsoft guns do not come with gas or silicone spray, and usually only come with 50-100 sample bbs. These products simply must be bought to operate your gas blow-back. Silicone must be used to lubricate the gas seals and working parts of gas guns otherwise full-operating power will not be achieved. We'd suggest applying silicone oil/spray your airsoft replica every 5-10 magazines worth depending on the model. Silicone lubricant should be applied to the top and bottom seal of the magazine as well as on any moving parts of a gas-blow-back. NB: WD40 or oil-based lubricants should not be used as they will react with plastic and rubbers parts causing severe damage. Only use gas, bbs and silicone spray recommended by Wolf Armouries to prolong the life of your Airsoft gas blow-back!

How long will my gas last?

How long is a piece of string? The length of time a can of gas costing 10-£15 varies with regards to air temperature and the model of gun. Obviously guns that have larger magazine hold more gas so you will get fewer charges from a can of gas. Similarly, in hot weather, some guns can use less gas as the gas expands more in the reservoir. Generally each time you charge a pistol magazine you will get 2.5 bbs worth fired from that magazine. As a generally rule of thumb you should get 15-20 medium charges out of a can of gas. Will still makes it cheaper than running a paintball marker or CO2 air pistol.

What is a HOP unit?

HOP systems were introduced to Airsoft replicas on wide scale in the early 1990s. HOP, or Higher-Operating Power, potentially improves the range of airsoft replicas by 50%. A hop-unit is a rubber chamber around the breach end of the replica's barrel, a small rubber dimple at the top of this chamber pushes pressure on bbs as they pass through the barrel, giving them a back-spin, modifying their trajectory to give them more range. The majority of airsoft replicas bought from Wolf Armouries include an adjustable hop-unit; all Tokyo Marui Electric come with a hop! An adjustable HOP-unit allows the user to adjust the amount of back-spin; this is useful as it means you can get the maximum range out of different weights of bbs, or turn the hop off completely for additional accuracy from a flat trajectory. Hop units can be fiddly to adjust to start with but it's easy to get the hang of it. NB: In some cases HOP is referred to as SCS standing for Spin-Control-System.

How can I upgrade my airsoft guns?

Pretty much any airsoft gun can be upgrade. Upgrade parts refer to the internal workings of the gun i.e. they improve accuracy, range or rate of fire. An upgraded gun offers the airsoft a big advantage in a firefight, allowing players to perform sharpshooter, sniper or support gunner roles. However modifying the internals of airsoft guns is a bit of a black art, and should not be considered lightly. Airsoft guns, especially electric rifles are complicated pieces of equipment full of springs and gubbins that are liable to fly out if you take them apart without correctly researching on the web what you are doing. It is for this reason that Wolf Armouries offer an upgrade service for a minimal fee, our in house trained-gun smith can internally upgrade most electric and gas-blow backs on site within a couple of days. What Safety/Protective gear do I require to play?

Safety equipment is not a luxury in airsoft; it is a minimum. No safety gear? Then don't play! Air protection must be warn at all times when using airsoft replicas; even when target shooting in the back garden. Even a reflected bb has enough power to do serious eye damage, impact rated eye-protect such as goggles are a must. If you don't fancy goggles then we'd suggest full-face protection. Basically this takes the form of a paintball mask that covers the face the ears and the eyes, completely protecting the user from the effects of a bb. However many people prefer Airsofting in goggles as it is less hot and offers a better field of vision, yet you do run the risk of being hit in the face or mouth which can be painful. Please note that some Airsoft sites require that you wear full-face protection to be covered by the insurance. Wolf Armouries stocks a comprehensive range of goggles and Full-Face Masks manufactured by companies such as Guarder, Oakley, Brass Eagle, V-Force and Survivor. Other safety equipment might include; replica body armour (replicas of real flak-jackets padded with foam to absorb bb hits), helmets to protect against head-shots, gloves (we at Wolf consider them a must as being shot in the knuckle is pretty painful) and full-ankle boots as well as knee-pads and elbow pads to protect from falls during gaming. Wolf Armouries stocks a range of these items manufactured by companies such as Guarder, Intruder Shop, Black Hawk, SWAT Systems, Classic Army, Pro Tec and Black Hawk Industries. We suggest you consider all of them to ensure that you are as safe as possible while gaming. If someone in seriously injured airsofting due to irresponsibility everyone's day or hobby could be ruined.

What other equipment or clothing might I require for airsofting?

As long as you have the correct safety equipment you don't really anything more to go airsofting. However we at Wolf would recommend that you definitely consider in investing in some camouflage combats and some form of load-bearing equipment. Wearing combats and webbing is not only tactically useful; i.e. it conceals you from other players and is an effective way of carrying your playing kit but it makes the game more fun and realistic. Many players invest lots of time and money into their equipment trying to achieve as realistic a look as possible, trying to mimic the equipment style of actual military forces such as the SAS or Delta Force. Generally most players have a woodland look; olive-drab or camouflage style materials and an urban look; a black swat team style. We suggest that as a minimum for site play that you consider buying combat trouser, combat jacket, combat vest, military boots with ankle support and some form of thick cap or helmet. This is by no means expensive. Wolf Armouries stocks a wide range of tactical equipment manufactured by companies such as Blackhawk, Guarder, Pro-Tec Swat Systems, Aktis, Wyyven and Mil-Force. We also stock fully licensed army surplus and do amazingly cheap deals on current British Army Soldier 95 equipment (please call for details).

What type of bb should I be using?

There are many different types of bbs on the market. The simple rule is don't buy cheap bbs; they are generally poorly made and contain micro deformities that may cause the bbs to jam in the barrel of an airsoft gun and lead to the gun becoming damaged. Wolf Armouries only sells high-grade bbs. A second key rule is never re-use bbs. Once fired they can become deformed and pick up dirt that can again cause jamming. Thirdly, never be tempted into buying paintball or exploding bbs. They may seem like fun but they can explode in the mechanism leading to internal damage and possibly an expensive repair bill. Simply don't bother with them! There are many different weights of bbs available. Those commonly stocked by Wolf Armouries are 0.2, 0.25,0.3, 0.33, 0.36,0.43g. In a standard electric rifle or pistol 0.2g is the best all rounder, moving up to 0.25 or 0.3g for additional accuracy. Super-heavy weight bbs should only be used in high-powered upgraded guns such as Sniper rifles where the accuracy over-distance is required,0.36 and 0.43g bbs are often coated with a Teflon coating to minimise friction as they pass down the barrel. NB: The 0.2, 0.25g that Wolf Armouries sells are biodegradable when in contact with UV rays so are environmentally friendly! 8mm calibre are also available for rare 8mm airsoft guns (all Wolf Airsoft guns are 6mm unless otherwise specified).

What happens if my airsoft gun goes wrong?

Like any machine airsoft guns are capable of going wrong. However they are unlike to break through part-failure; the majority of guns break through misuse or de-stabilising customisation work. As standard an electric airsoft gun is a well-tuned highly balanced machine; potentially even with regular use the guns can last a long time. For example a member of the Wolf team has an AEG that is over 11 years old!
