Description

Tokyo Marui AKX ZET System Gas Blowback Airsoft Rifle with Side-Folding Skeleton Stock in Black

The Tokyo Marui AKX ZET System Gas Blowback Airsoft Rifle in Black takes the familiar Kalashnikov layout and gives it a thoroughly modern makeover without losing the character that makes an AK so enjoyable to use. Based around Tokyo Marui's proven ZET System gas blowback platform, the AKX combines realistic operation with contemporary ergonomics, extensive accessory mounting options and that wonderfully mechanical GBBR shooting experience. Pick it up and it immediately feels purposeful. At approximately 3.03kg, there's enough weight to give this airsoft rifle a convincing presence without making it feel like you're carrying a railway sleeper around the skirmish field.

Pull the trigger and the AKX really comes alive. Tokyo Marui uses a large 19mm piston blowback engine, giving the bolt a sharp and satisfying kick with every shot. It's considerably more involving than firing an Airsoft AEG; you feel the action cycling, hear the bolt working and have to approach reloads with the manual of arms you'd expect from a gas blowback rifle. The AKX offers safe, semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes, while muzzle velocity sits at approximately 300 FPS when tested using 0.20g BBs. The recoil has plenty of character without making the rifle difficult to control. A quick double tap, settle the sights, another shot. Lovely stuff.

Starting at the front, the outer barrel uses the familiar 14mm CCW male thread, giving owners plenty of choice when it comes to compatible tracer units, suppressors and alternative muzzle devices. Tokyo Marui supplies the AKX with its own modern muzzle brake, which works nicely with the rifle's short, aggressive profile. Behind this sits the combined front sight and gas block, while the CNC-machined aluminium M-LOK handguard provides a far more versatile setup than traditional AK furniture. M-LOK mounting positions around the handguard allow torches, grips and other accessories to be positioned without turning the front of the rifle into a bulky mess. Three M-LOK rail sections are supplied too, in 3-slot, 5-slot and 7-slot lengths.

Move further back and things get particularly interesting. A 20mm Picatinny rail runs across the upper assembly, providing a practical platform for red dots and other optics. Traditional AK dust covers aren't exactly famous for being the best place to mount an optic, but Tokyo Marui has addressed that problem with a locking receiver-cover system. A rear locking dial secures the cover firmly in position, reducing unwanted movement and creating a much more dependable optics mounting surface. Low-profile aperture iron sights are fitted as standard and offer a clean, intuitive sight picture. Add your favourite compact red dot and the AKX feels right at home in a modern CQB or woodland setup.

The controls have received just as much attention. Tokyo Marui's enlarged selector includes an extended finger shelf, so safe, semi and full-auto can be selected with considerably less hand movement than you'd normally associate with an AK-pattern assault rifle. The extended magazine release also makes changes quicker and easier, while the redesigned pistol grip has a fuller, more comfortable profile than the skinny traditional AK grip. In practical use, those seemingly small changes add up. The rifle feels easier to manipulate when you're moving between cover, changing shoulders or trying to get a fresh magazine seated while someone on the other team is doing their best to keep your head down.

At the rear is one of the AKX's defining features: its side-folding skeleton stock. The reinforced polymer A-frame stock uses a sturdy alloy hinge and can be folded alongside the receiver, reducing the overall length from approximately 740mm to a compact 545mm. That makes this gas blowback airsoft gun particularly manageable around doorways, vehicles and tight CQB environments. Extended, the stock provides a comfortable and stable shoulder position without adding unnecessary bulk. There's also a 1913 Picatinny stock interface, opening the door to compatible aftermarket stock setups, while QD sling mounting points make integrating the rifle into your existing kit straightforward.

Internally, the AKX benefits from the sort of hop-up performance that has made Tokyo Marui airsoft guns so well regarded. The adjustable gear-style hop unit is accessed by removing the locking receiver cover, recoil spring assembly and bolt carrier. A numbered adjustment wheel makes tuning straightforward, and once set correctly the 200mm long, 6.08mm diameter inner barrel provides consistent performance with suitable quality BBs. It's a relatively short barrel on paper, but don't let that fool you. Tokyo Marui's hop design has a habit of squeezing impressive usable range and accuracy from dimensions that might look modest on a specification sheet.

Feeding the rifle is a 35-round die-cast aluminium Green Gas magazine styled after the distinctive look of classic AK Bakelite magazines. Thirty-five rounds means you'll need to think about your shots rather than holding the trigger and hoping for the best, but that's half the appeal of a GBB rifle. Reloads become part of the experience. Rock the magazine home, work the controls and get back into the fight. Combined with the reciprocating bolt and strong 19mm piston system, it makes the AKX feel satisfyingly alive compared with an electric airsoft rifle.

For players wanting a premium modern AK GBBR, the Tokyo Marui AKX is an impressive package. You get full-metal construction where it counts, a CNC aluminium M-LOK front end, adjustable hop-up, 14mm CCW muzzle threading, extensive 20mm rail space and a genuinely useful folding-stock arrangement, all wrapped around Tokyo Marui's ZET System. More importantly, the features work together rather than feeling bolted on for appearances. It's compact, tactile and remarkably enjoyable to manipulate. If the traditional AK is an old workhorse, the AKX is that same workhorse after a serious trip to the custom shop.
