WE Tech L85 / SA80 Open Bolt Gas Blowback GBB Rifle
The WE L85A1 is a gas blowback airsoft replica of the British Army’s L85/SA80 standard rifle, built for airsoft players, military re-enactors, and enthusiasts who want an authentic British military-style weapon with realistic recoil, accurate handling, and a compact bullpup set up. Based on the British Army's standard-issue rifle, the L85A1 was adopted in 1984, produced at the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield, and during its development was redesigned around the 5.56mm NATO cartridge. In airsoft form, this L85 airsoft rifle delivers hard-hitting kickback and authentic controls, making it a strong choice for anyone building a British loadout or trying to find a distinctive, high-performance replica for skirmishing and military simulation.
The platform remained in service through later upgrades, with the L85A2 introduced in 2002, and the L85A3 prototype announced and unveiled in 2016. British soldiers criticized early service performance, which helps explain the adoption and development path that followed.
Right out of the box, the rifle impresses with its heavy-duty full metal construction and realistic stamped steel body, giving this distinctive piece of British small arms equipment the weight, feel, and unique design that set it apart from a standard rifle. Weighing in at around 4030g and stretching 800mm in length, it's as close as you'll get to the actual L85 without enlisting. The bullpup configuration gives it a compact size despite the full-length inner barrel, which suits tight spaces and CQB use while still supporting accurate shots at range, but the layout is designed primarily and exclusively for right-handed users, so left shoulder use feels less natural.
This GBB rifle operates on an open bolt system, delivering an incredibly satisfying realistic recoil and clack with each shot. WE-Tech has packed this model with features like a functioning bolt lock, enlarged charging handle, cocking handle operation, hold-open behavior, and a fire selector mimicking the original, with full auto included as part of the fire mode set, all of which add to more authentic weapon handling. When fired, the rifle has an unmistakable gas-powered punch and sound—something that truly sets it apart from electric rifles.
The detachable carry handle makes way for the iconic SUSAT-style optic, should you want to complete the authentic British Army look. Later service variants switched handguard and rail layouts, and modern accessory setups make it easier to add optional equipment if you want a different configuration. The durable nylon fiber cheek rest, foregrip, and handle make extended use comfortable, whether you're on the skirmish field or participating in military simulations.
Performance-wise, the WE L85A1 is no slouch. It typically shoots around 350-400 FPS with 0.2g BBs using green gas, giving it strong and consistent performance within typical engagement distances of around 70 to 140 feet. The adjustable hop-up system allows for fine-tuning your shots, and thanks to the Gen II Open Chamber design, you get smoother cycling and better gas efficiency.
Another big plus is the magazine setup. It uses STANAG-pattern green gas magazines, typically around 30 rounds, which keeps the replica closer to the real rifle’s format even if total capacity is lower than most AEGs—as is normal for gas blowback rifles. With support for green gas, propane, and even CO2 with the appropriate mags, it adapts well to different weather conditions and preferences.
Maintaining the L85 is still manageable thanks to a design that allows easy disassembly for cleaning and troubleshooting, but GBBR service and cleaning are generally more involved than on AEG platforms. Reliability problems in the original L85A1 caused extensive trials and later upgrade work as users tried to find fixes for an unreliable service rifle, and that history makes reliability and maintenance worth understanding on any L85 replica. This article looks at the WE L85A1’s construction, controls, performance, magazine compatibility, maintenance needs, and overall suitability for skirmishing and military simulation, so you can judge whether it fits your purpose.
Whether you're a skirmisher looking for a powerful, unique airsoft rifle or a re-enactor seeking accuracy down to the last detail, the WE L85 GBBR ticks all the boxes. It's got the look, the feel, and the firepower to dominate on the field—especially if you're aiming to replicate the British Armed Forces experience.
