WE TECH M9A1 Gen2 Gas Blowback Airsoft Pistol in Black

The WE TECH M9A1 Gen2 Gas Blowback Airsoft Pistol in Black takes the classic military M9 shape and gives it a more modern airsoft setup without losing the character that made the platform so recognisable in the first place. This is a full metal GBB pistol with a metal slide and frame, textured polymer grip panels and a Green Gas blowback system that cycles the action every time you fire. Add the M9A1-style 20mm accessory rail, adjustable HOP-up and selectable Semi-Automatic and Full-Automatic firing modes, and you've got an airsoft pistol that feels traditional in the hand but has a few tricks the original service-style layout certainly didn't.

Starting at the front, the M9A1 frame incorporates a 20mm Picatinny accessory rail underneath the barrel. That's one of the most useful differences between this version and older, plainer M9 configurations because it gives you a proper mounting point for a compatible pistol light or other suitable accessory. For CQB, a compact torch makes plenty of sense. More importantly, you don't have to resort to one of those bulky clamp-on rail adapters that can make an older M9 look like it's wearing scaffolding underneath the barrel.

The slide and frame are both metal, giving the WE M9A1 the substantial feel many airsofters expect from this platform. With the magazine installed, weight comes in at approximately 900g, so there's a reassuring amount of heft in the hand. Pick it up after using a lightweight polymer-framed airsoft handgun and the difference is immediate. That extra mass also contributes to the shooting experience because Green Gas has to cycle a proper metal slide rather than a lightweight plastic assembly. The result is a satisfying mechanical snap every time the pistol fires.

This Gen2 version uses WE's revised gas blowback system, including an upgraded cylinder assembly and redesigned bucking. The idea is to improve cycling behaviour and gas efficiency compared with earlier WE M9 generations while giving the pistol a cleaner overall firing response. It's still a full metal Green Gas airsoft gun, so cold weather and fast shooting will naturally affect performance, but the Gen2 revisions give the platform a more developed internal setup. In practical terms, it feels like an evolution rather than simply the same old M9 in a newer box.

Inside, the approximately 110mm barrel works with an adjustable HOP-up system. HOP-up applies controlled backspin to the 6mm BB, helping it maintain a flatter trajectory and improving usable range when properly adjusted. Don't just wind it to maximum and expect miracles. Small adjustments are the way to go. Set the pistol around the BB weight you're actually using, fire a few shots and watch how they travel. Once you've found the sweet spot, leave it alone and enjoy the consistency.

Quoted velocity sits at approximately 320-350 FPS using 0.20g BBs, although actual performance can change with gas pressure, ambient temperature, magazine temperature and firing speed. That's normal for a Green Gas GBB pistol. A warm magazine will generally cycle harder than one that's been sitting in a cold kit bag all morning, and hammering through shots quickly will cool the gas reservoir. Chronograph the airsoft gun using your site's required BB weight and procedure before play rather than treating a published FPS figure as an absolute.

Then there's the feature that gives this particular M9A1 a much livelier personality: selectable Full-Automatic fire. Alongside normal Semi-Auto operation, the Gen2 can switch into automatic fire, allowing the pistol to cycle repeatedly while the trigger remains pressed. It's entertaining. Very entertaining, actually. It also burns through BBs and gas at an impressive rate, especially with a heavy metal slide moving backwards and forwards. Short bursts make far more sense than trying to empty the whole magazine in one heroic squeeze, particularly in colder weather.

The rear of the pistol retains the exposed hammer and familiar M9-style safety arrangement, with ambidextrous controls accessible from either side. The functional decocking system adds another layer of mechanical character, allowing the hammer to be lowered without firing. That's quite different from the simple trigger-safety layout found on many modern striker-style airsoft pistols. If you enjoy traditional service-handgun controls and like actually manipulating the mechanism rather than just pulling the trigger, the M9 platform has plenty of appeal.

The grip is broad and unmistakably M9, with textured polymer panels providing a secure contact surface. Players with medium or larger hands will probably feel at home straight away, while those used to slim modern pistols may notice the extra width. The magazine follows the familiar double-stack style and carries approximately 25+1 rounds. That's a useful capacity for normal sidearm duty, and the Green Gas reservoir is built into the magazine as you'd expect from this type of GBB pistol.

Magazine compatibility is another practical advantage. The Gen2 platform is stated to work with most WE and Tokyo Marui M9-series magazines, giving you a broader range of options when looking for spares. As with any cross-brand gas magazine compatibility, individual generations and specifications can vary, so it's still worth matching the correct M9-series magazine before ordering a pile of extras. Better to check first than discover afterwards that your bargain magazine has the structural compatibility of a brick in a toaster.

As a skirmish sidearm, the WE TECH M9A1 Gen2 brings together the features that actually matter: adjustable HOP-up, a usable 25+1 round magazine capacity, metal construction, a 20mm accessory rail and familiar ambidextrous controls. The Gen2 gas system gives the classic platform a useful internal refresh, while the selectable Full-Auto mode adds a properly mischievous extra option. If you want an airsoft handgun with old-school military styling but don't want a completely basic replica, this one strikes a very entertaining balance.
