The WE Tech GALAXY 1911 Series Gas Blowback Airsoft Pistol in Black & Purple takes the familiar foundations of a 1911 and gives them a properly futuristic makeover. Made by WE Tech, this distinctive GBB pistol combines aluminium alloy construction with fibre-reinforced polymer components, a cylindrical upper assembly and a rear charging handle rather than following the conventional 1911 slide profile. Then there's the colour scheme. Black provides the purposeful base while the purple detailing gives this airsoft gun enough personality to stand out immediately amongst more traditional sidearms. If standard military-style pistols are starting to feel a little samey, the GALAXY certainly changes the scenery.

Despite the space-age appearance, the lower half retains the familiar feel of a 1911-style airsoft pistol. That means the grip angle and general control placement don't require much adjustment if you've spent time using other 1911 GBB pistols. At around 1250g and approximately 220mm long, the GALAXY has a surprisingly substantial presence when you first pick it up. It isn't some featherweight polymer plinker. The aluminium alloy components provide plenty of reassuring weight, while fibre-reinforced polymer parts help keep the construction practical for regular skirmish use.

At the front sits a metal outer barrel with provision for fitting a suitable silencer or tracer adapter. That's particularly useful if you're building the GALAXY into a dedicated CQB airsoft handgun, where a tracer unit can be worth its weight in gold during darker indoor games. Fibre optic iron sights provide a bright, easy-to-find reference point above the barrel. Raise the pistol quickly and your eye naturally catches the sight rather than having to search for a tiny black post against a dark target. Doesn't sound dramatic on paper, does it? In a gloomy corridor with somebody about to disappear behind cover, it suddenly makes perfect sense.

The upper assembly is what gives the WE GALAXY its unmistakable character. Instead of copying the long reciprocating profile associated with a traditional M1911, WE has gone with a cylindrical design incorporating a rear charging handle. The arrangement gives the BB pistol a competition-meets-sci-fi appearance, particularly in this black and purple configuration. The metal upper components also contribute to the solid feel of the pistol. It looks unconventional from across the safe zone, but once it's in your hand the familiar 1911-style lower frame stops it feeling completely alien.

Controls have received the custom treatment as well. A blade-style trigger adds to the modern appearance, while the enlarged magazine catch is easy to locate when it's time for a reload. The supplied metal Green Gas magazine carries 16 BBs, commonly listed as a 16+1 capacity when including a BB already chambered. Having a larger magazine release makes a noticeable difference when you're trying to swap magazines quickly with gloves on. The GALAXY is designed as a skirmishable airsoft pistol rather than something that merely looks interesting in a display cabinet, and touches like this help prove the point.

WE has also provided plenty of accessory potential. The GALAXY features 22mm tactical rail provision, including an under-barrel mounting position for compatible accessories such as an airsoft pistol light. That gives the platform plenty of room to develop into a personalised CQB setup. Keep it stripped back and the unusual upper remains the visual focus; start adding accessories and it can become a very different beast. Black and purple already gives the pistol a custom appearance straight from the box, so it doesn't take much to create something genuinely individual.

Internally, the pistol uses a hop-up system to apply backspin to the BB and help maintain a flatter flight path. The supplied specifications put muzzle velocity at approximately 310 FPS, making it a sensible output for the close-to-medium distances where a GBB pistol normally does most of its work. Quality 6mm 0.20g BBs are the recommended starting point. Green Gas provides the power, and actual FPS and cycling performance will naturally vary with temperature and gas pressure. Anyone who's skirmished a gas pistol through a cold British winter will know exactly how much difference the weather can make.

The gas blowback system is a big part of the GALAXY's appeal. Pull the blade trigger and you get the movement, sound and tactile response that makes a GBB pistol so much more involving to shoot than a basic non-blowback BB pistol. The design is also field-strippable, making routine inspection, cleaning and lubrication more straightforward. That's worth keeping on top of with any regularly used Green Gas airsoft handgun. A little sensible maintenance goes a long way, particularly after dusty woodland games or a busy CQB session where the pistol has been through magazine after magazine.

The WE Tech GALAXY 1911 Black & Purple is ultimately for players who fancy something outside the usual mould. You still get recognisable 1911 ergonomics, Green Gas operation, gas blowback, fibre optic sights, a metal outer barrel and practical accessory rails, but they're wrapped in a design with far more visual attitude than a conventional service pistol. Producing around 310 FPS and supplied with a metal gas magazine, it's ready to serve as a distinctive skirmish sidearm while offering plenty of scope for personalisation. Part 1911, part competition pistol and part sci-fi prop – an odd recipe perhaps, but somehow it works.
