WE Tech R5C PCC Gas Blowback Airsoft Rifle with Retractable Metal PDW Stock in Black

The WE Tech R5C PCC Gas Blowback Airsoft Rifle in Black takes familiar M4-style ergonomics and squeezes them into a compact pistol-calibre carbine format. Instead of the usual chunky M4 magazine, the R5C uses a slim 9mm-style proprietary PCC magazine, immediately giving this airsoft gun a different silhouette and a more streamlined feel around the receiver. Pair that with the short front end and retractable metal PDW stock and you've got a GBB rifle that feels particularly at home around doorways, barricades and tight CQB environments. Fully extended, it's approximately 61cm long, so there isn't much unnecessary rifle hanging out in front or behind you when space gets cramped.

The big attraction, of course, is the gas blowback system. This isn't an Airsoft AEG, so instead of an electric motor and gearbox doing the work, Green Gas powers the firing cycle and produces mechanical movement with each shot. The action cycling gives the R5C proper feedback through the shoulder and hands, adding that tactile character GBBR players tend to get hooked on. Safe, Semi-Automatic and Full-Automatic modes are available, letting you keep things controlled in semi or give the little PCC a considerably louder personality when full-auto is permitted. Thirty rounds disappear rather quickly on automatic, mind you. Fun? Absolutely. Economical with gas? Not particularly.

Starting at the front, WE has fitted a short aluminium Raptor-style handguard around a silencer-style metal outer barrel assembly. It's a chunky-looking setup without making the airsoft rifle unnecessarily long, which suits the whole PCC concept nicely. The handguard incorporates a 20mm Picatinny accessory rail system, and rail sections are supplied for mounting compatible equipment where required. There's plenty of potential for a compact red dot and other useful accessories, although the R5C works best when you resist turning it into a mobile accessories catalogue. Keep the setup lean and the short proportions really come into their own.

WE also supplies removable metal flip-up front and rear sights, giving you a usable sighting arrangement without requiring an optic straight away. Run them raised as conventional irons or fold them down when fitting a compatible red dot. Behind the sights sits a metal alloy receiver, complemented by a fibre-reinforced polymer pistol grip. Combined with the metal barrel assembly and stock, the R5C weighs approximately 2609g with its magazine installed. So while this is a compact airsoft rifle, it doesn't feel featherweight. There's enough mass in your hands to give the gas blowback action something substantial to work against, which adds nicely to the overall shooting experience.

At the rear is the retractable metal PDW-style stock, one of the R5C's most useful features for close-quarter play. Extend it when you want a conventional shoulder position and collapse it when moving through buildings or working around awkward cover. The difference sounds simple, but it changes how comfortably a rifle behaves in confined spaces. A fixed stock can feel like it's constantly finding walls and door frames for you; the PDW arrangement keeps the rear end much tidier. A QD swivel is also included, giving you another useful option when setting the rifle up around a compatible sling arrangement.

The R5C uses an adjustable Hop-Up system, allowing the backspin applied to the 6mm BB to be tuned for a flatter trajectory and more consistent usable range. WE places the rifle at approximately 320-350 FPS, although gas blowback performance naturally varies according to temperature, gas pressure, BB weight, Hop-Up adjustment and firing conditions. That's worth remembering with any GBB airsoft rifle. The same gun can produce noticeably different chronograph readings on a cold morning and a warm summer afternoon, so chrono the R5C using the gas and BB setup you're actually going to play with and always check it against the limits of your site.

Then there's the magazine, and this bit is important. The supplied gas magazine holds 30 rounds and is a proprietary WE PCC design. Despite information sometimes seen elsewhere, WE G-Series magazines do not fit the R5C. We've physically checked the fit, so if you're buying spare magazines, make sure you're ordering the correct WE PCC type rather than stocking up on G-Series mags and discovering the problem afterwards. The 30-round capacity also gives the rifle the more deliberate rhythm associated with a GBBR. You'll reload more frequently than with a 100-plus-round AEG mid-cap, but that's part of the attraction for players who enjoy more realistic magazine management.

Green Gas is the standard power source, while WE also lists the platform as compatible with a separately available CO2 magazine. As with any gas blowback airsoft gun, the magazines deserve a little attention of their own. Keeping seals maintained, using suitable gas and checking magazines for leaks will make ownership considerably easier in the long run. Gas rifles are inherently a little more hands-on than most electric platforms, but that's also where much of their appeal comes from. Loading thirty BBs, charging the magazine with gas and feeling the action cycle every time you squeeze the trigger turns shooting into a more mechanical, involved experience.

The WE Tech R5C PCC sits somewhere between an airsoft assault rifle and an airsoft sub machine gun in the best possible way. You get recognisable rifle-style controls, a proper shoulder stock and a substantial metal receiver, yet the short front end and straight PCC magazine make the overall package far easier to manage in CQB. Add realistic gas blowback, full-auto capability, adjustable Hop-Up, removable sights and plenty of accessory mounting space, and there's real practicality underneath the unusual appearance. For players after a compact GBB rifle that steps away from the endless procession of conventional M4 builds, the R5C has bags of character. And when that bolt starts cycling? Yeah, that's where the fun begins.
