Description

G&G Armament L85 AFV L22 Carbine 2.0 GT Advanced AEG Airsoft Rifle with ETU in Black

The G&G Armament L85 AFV L22 Carbine 2.0 GT Advanced AEG is a compact British-style airsoft rifle with considerably more personality than the usual rows of AR-pattern platforms. Based around the short L22 member of the SA80 family, it uses the familiar bullpup arrangement, placing the magazine and action behind the trigger. The payoff is a remarkably compact 585mm overall length while retaining an approximately 300mm inner barrel. At roughly 3.1kg it still has the reassuring weight associated with an L85-style airsoft gun, but without the long front end of a full-size service rifle. For CQB, vehicle-themed loadouts or woodland games where you're constantly moving around cover, that short overall package is genuinely useful.

Pick it up and the construction immediately gives the L22 a different feel from lightweight polymer Airsoft AEG platforms. G&G uses stamped steel for the upper and lower receiver sections, backed up by additional metal components and the distinctive SA80-style polymer furniture. There's a proper solidity to it. Up front, the birdcage-style flash hider sits on a 14mm CCW male threaded outer barrel, allowing compatible airsoft tracer units and suppressors to be fitted after removing the standard muzzle device. The compact handguard also provides 20mm Picatinny accessory mounting space, useful for adding a vertical grip, torch or other suitable kit without making this already chunky little carbine feel overloaded.

The bullpup layout makes operating the L22 quite different from an M4, and that's half the appeal. The pistol grip and trigger sit ahead of the magazine well, while the fire selector is positioned further back and carries traditional British-style markings, with “R” representing repetition or semi-auto and “A” for automatic fire. A push-through safety sits conveniently near the grip, while the protected A2-style magazine release and enlarged charging handle continue the SA80 theme. The rear of the rifle has sling mounting points on both sides, a serrated rubber butt plate and a polymer cheek rest. It feels unmistakably like an L85-family replica rather than an AR wearing different furniture.

Pull back the charging handle and you'll expose the adjustable gear-style HOP-up, which works alongside G&G's green cold-resistant HOP rubber and approximately 300mm inner barrel. The supplied specifications recommend 0.20g to 0.25g 6mm BBs, giving players some room to experiment with ammunition and HOP settings. Estimated velocity is around 320 FPS, although every airsoft rifle should be put through a chronograph using your site's required BB weight before play. The mock bolt can also be held rearward with the functional bolt catch, making HOP adjustment less of a finger-twisting exercise. A small thing, perhaps, but anyone who's adjusted a stubborn HOP while wearing gloves will appreciate it.

Internally, G&G hasn't treated the L22 like an old-school bullpup AEG. Its dedicated L85 split gearbox arrangement uses a PSG-1-length piston, 18:1 steel gears and 8mm brass bushings, with a G&G Orange IRFIT 25K high-speed motor providing the drive. The GT Advanced specification also brings in G&G's electronic trigger unit and MOSFET. That electronic setup gives this Airsoft AEG a more contemporary trigger system than the basic mechanical contacts found in older electric rifles. It's a welcome combination in a platform where the unusual bullpup trigger layout could otherwise make the firing experience feel rather dated.

The ETU also gives you a programmable 3-round burst option in place of normal full-auto fire. Programming is carried out through the trigger rather than requiring a separate controller. With the battery fitted and the rifle set to semi-auto, holding the trigger for approximately 10 seconds changes the automatic mode to 3-round burst; repeating the process restores full-auto. When carrying out programming, remove the magazine, wear suitable eye protection and keep the airsoft gun pointed in a safe direction. Once configured, you have the choice between conventional semi/full-auto operation or semi-auto paired with a controlled three-shot burst.

Then there's the electric blowback system, which gives the L22 a bit of theatre every time you pull the trigger. The mock bolt carrier reciprocates as the rifle cycles, adding visible movement, extra mechanical sound and a touch of feedback through the body of the gun. Don't expect the kick of a gas blowback rifle – electric blowback works rather differently – but it certainly makes firing the L22 feel livelier than using a completely static AEG. It's one of those features that doesn't necessarily make you shoot better, but does make the rifle more entertaining. And, frankly, airsoft is supposed to be fun.

Magazine compatibility is another practical win. G&G supplies the L22 with a 450-round high-capacity magazine, while the rifle accepts M4/AR-15 AEG magazines. That's particularly handy if you already have a pile of compatible magazines sitting in your kit bag, and traditional steel STANAG-style magazines look right at home in an SA80-based build. Up top, however, there's an important difference to remember: the receiver uses a 19mm NATO/STANAG-style dovetail rather than the standard 20mm Picatinny rail found on most modern airsoft rifles. The supplied carry handle suits the platform nicely, while players fitting other optics may need an appropriate rail adapter.

Overall, the G&G L85 AFV L22 Carbine 2.0 GT Advanced is an unusual electric airsoft gun with a useful mix of traditional SA80 character and modern AEG electronics. The stamped steel construction gives it convincing heft, while the 25K motor, ETU, MOSFET, programmable burst mode and electric blowback bring the internals firmly into modern territory. Its 585mm bullpup format also makes far more sense in confined spaces than its chunky appearance initially suggests. Fancy turning up with something that doesn't look like everybody else's M4? This compact British carbine certainly won't disappear into the crowd.
